I have long considered myself a landscape photographer and I've always been drawn to wide open spaces. However, as the signs of human interaction with the land have increased, so too has my interest in these signs and symbols that I refer to as “markings.” I now often incorporate evidence of human impact as an element in my images or, just as often, as the primary subject. I explore the world through the making of photographs. I consider it a way to more fully connect with my surroundings, a way to experience the old,the new, the familiar, the unfamiliar. I approach making photographs as one might approach foraging for food, wandering the countryside, ever observant. It is, for me, an equally necessary activity.
